Are you looking for the ultimate family city break? Look no further than Billund, Denmark! This charming town, home to LEGOLAND and the LEGO House, offers endless entertainment for children and parents alike. In this blog post, I’ll take you through our incredible experience visiting Billund last October 2022 and give you all the insider tips and tricks to make your family’s city break just as unforgettable.

Billund: A LEGO Lover’s Dream
Located in the heart of Denmark, Billund is a small town with a big personality. It boasts of the original LEGOLAND Theme Park, the LEGO House, and the fantastic Lalandia Billund Waterpark. With such various attractions, it’s no wonder Billund is a family-favourite destination.

Fly into Fun: Billund Airport and Beyond
Billund Airport (BLL) is your gateway to this LEGO wonderland. Surprisingly, the LEGO Group built the airport in 1961! With affordable flights from the UK, reaching Billund is a breeze. We took a budget-friendly Ryanair flight, and in less than an hour and a half, we were ready for adventure!
From the airport, you have several options for getting into town. Nine bus routes pass through the airport, and taxis are readily available outside the airport building. However, it’s important to note that Uber doesn’t operate in Denmark due to national taxi laws.
We chose to rent a car from Enterprise for the ultimate convenience and flexibility. Car rentals start from £27 per day for a small manual car, and having our own transport allowed us to cover more ground and tackle our bustling itinerary. Between June and August, there is a FREE shuttle bus from Billund Airport to and from the main attractions in Billund.

Exploring Billund: On Foot or On Wheels
Once you arrive, you’ll find that many attractions are within walking distance of each other. For example, LEGOLAND Billund is diagonal to Lalandia, just 6 mins walk from one another, the LEGO House is just 15 mins from LEGOLAND, and the Skulpturpark is less than 10 minutes from LEGOLAND.
However, a rental car might be your best bet if you plan to visit some of the more remote spots like WOW PARK or GIVSKUD ZOO. We chose to rent a car from Enterprise for the ultimate convenience and flexibility.

Home Sweet Home: Our Billund Accommodations
We did 2 nights and 3 full days in Billund. We could have done with one more full day as we would have benefitted from a full day at the LEGO House instead of the half day we spent there.
We stayed in a cozy Rica House Airbnb in central Billund, just minutes away from the LEGO House and other attractions. Our accommodation was perfectly located, reasonably priced, and comfortable. It was exactly what we needed. Only 4 min walk from a Netto Supermarket, 6 min walk from Bellini Café Ristorante, where we had dinner on the first night, and 8 mins walk from the LEGO House.
Other lodging options include holiday homes at Lalandia or the LEGOLAND Billund Resort, both offering family-friendly accommodations.

Billund’s Best: Attractions for the Whole Family
- We loved GIVSKUD ZOO because of its unique combination of a zoo, safari park, and dinosaur park, providing an exciting and diverse experience for all of us. The close encounters with animals during the guided safari tours were thrilling and educational, fostering a deeper appreciation for wildlife and conservation efforts. Spending about 4 to 6 hours there was just right for us.
- We highly recommend the Lalandia AquaDome in Billund because it offers an exhilarating and fun-filled experience for the whole family, with its extensive range of water slides, pools, and activities catering to all ages. The well-maintained and clean facilities and tropical atmosphere provide a fantastic break from the hustle and bustle of theme parks or sightseeing. We spent around 3 to 5 hours here, and its proximity to other attractions in Billund, such as LEGOLAND, makes it a convenient and enjoyable addition to your itinerary.
- WOW PARK Billund offers an exciting, nature-inspired adventure for the whole family, with various treetop challenges, climbing structures, and outdoor activities catering to all ages. The park encourages physical activity, teamwork, and exploration in a safe, well-designed environment. Its unique blend of play with natural surroundings makes it a memorable and enjoyable experience, standing out from typical theme parks and attractions. We would suggest allowing a full day to explore and enjoy WOW PARK.
- The LEGO House is a must-visit attraction in Billund, especially for LEGO enthusiasts. This interactive experience center offers various zones for building, learning, and playing with LEGO bricks. We would recommend allocating a full day to explore everything the LEGO House has to offer.
- Finally, no trip to Billund is complete without a visit to LEGOLAND. This iconic theme park features various LEGO-themed rides, attractions, and displays that cater to both young and old LEGO fans. A full day is ideal to enjoy all that LEGOLAND has to offer.

Taste of Billund: Our Family’s Foodie Favourites
- We absolutely adored the sandwiches at Billund Bageri and made it our go-to spot for breakfast every morning during our stay in Billund. The freshness and quality of their ingredients and the delightful variety of sandwich options made it a delightful and satisfying start to our days. We couldn’t resist the temptation of having such a delicious breakfast experience daily.
- We were thoroughly impressed by our dining experience at the MINI CHEF Restaurant and highly recommend trying it at least once during your visit to Billund. The innovative LEGO-themed concept, interactive ordering system, and playful presentation of the dishes made it a unique and memorable experience. Coupled with the delicious and creative menu offerings, it was truly an unforgettable dining adventure that left a lasting impression on our entire family.
- We enjoyed dining at Bellini Café Ristorante during our stay in Billund. The restaurant offered a warm and welcoming ambiance and delicious pizzas that satisfied our cravings after a long day of exploration.
Planning Perfection: When to Visit Billund
Danish school holidays vary depending on the specific holiday and region. However, the main school holidays in Denmark often differ slightly from ours in the UK. For example, the Summer Break typically runs from the end of June to early August, while the Autumn Break usually falls one week before the UK equivalent.
We took advantage and visited the weekend before the Danish started their school holiday, but you can still visit during the UK school holidays and miss out on peak times. The only thing to consider is that some attractions have seasonal opening hours and are closed throughout the year. This is the case for LEGOLAND Billund and GIVSKUD ZOO.

Our family city break in Billund was an experience we’ll never forget. While Denmark can be pricey, the convenience of having all the attractions so close together and the sheer joy our family felt exploring this LEGO lover’s paradise made it all worth it. We highly recommend considering Billund as your next destination if you’re looking for the perfect family getaway. With its diverse attractions, unique experiences, and wonderful accommodations, it’s a city that will capture the hearts of both the young and young at heart. So pack your bags, gather your loved ones, and embark on an unforgettable family adventure in Billund, Denmark.
